Member ID Card Update: Suitcase Icon Moving On

For: Professional and Facility Providers

The BlueCard® suitcase icon is being retired. Highmark has already begun issuing ID cards that no longer include the various suitcase logos to enrolled members.

Background

The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) revised its brand regulations in late 2024. As a result, the various BlueCard suitcase logos are being replaced with product acronyms on member ID cards. This branding change impacts all market segments and all regions.

The suitcase icon has traditionally signified BlueCard coverage, helping providers identify members eligible for out-of-area benefits. It is now replaced with the applicable product acronym only (PPO, EPO, HMO, etc.) only.

What to Know

  • This change has no impact on member benefits or a member’s network access.
  • The suitcase icon will be removed from the member ID card and replaced with a product indicator (PPO, EPO, HMO, etc.), which can appear anywhere on the ID card.
  • Only new member ID cards or ones that require a maintenance change will be updated; other members will keep their existing card until a change is required.
  • You may see a mix of member ID cards with and without the suitcase icon during the transition.
  • The transition will continue into 2027.

Verifying Eligibility – With a Member ID Card

  • The main identifier for out-of-area members is the prefix.
  • A correct member ID number includes the prefix (first three positions) and all subsequent characters, up to 17 positions total. This means that you may see cards with ID numbers between six and 14 numerals/letters following the prefix.
  • If the member's ID card does not include a prefix, call the phone number on the ID card.

Checking Eligibility – Without a Physical Card

  • Use Availity Essentials® or the local plan’s provider portal to confirm the member’s coverage.
  • Submit a HIPAA 270 transaction to the local plan to request the information you need.
  • Call BlueCard Eligibility at 800-676-BLUE (2583). Make sure to have the prefix from the member's ID card ready.
