New WV Law Allows Optometrists to Perform Laser Surgery

Effective July 9, 2025, Senate Bill 565 amended the West Virginia Code related to optometry, expanding the scope of practice to include laser surgery for providers who meet specific certification requirements.

To perform laser procedures, optometrists must obtain an Ophthalmic Laser Utilization Certificate from the West Virginia Board of Optometry. If you have a laser certificate, please submit a copy of your laser certification to Highmark via this link.
