To ensure accurate and timely reimbursement for medical injectable drug (MID) claims, providers must use the National Drug Code (NDC) on the package or carton.
Some injectable drug products have two NDCs – one on the outside of the larger package or carton, and another on the individual vial. For example, Drug X may have the following two codes:
Correct: Package/Carton NDC: XXXXX-XXXXX-01
Wrong: Individual Vial NDC: XXXXX-XXXX-04
Important: When submitting MID claims, you must use the NDC on the package or carton, not the code on the individual vial.
If further assistance is required to determine the appropriate NDC, consult the drug manufacturer’s website or the FDA National Drug Code Directory.
