Avoid This Error When Submitting MSK Authorization Requests

For: Professional and Facility Providers

Providers should select “Surgical” under Service Type when submitting an authorization request for musculoskeletal (MSK) services via the Authorizations and Referrals process within the Availity Essentials®. This will ensure prompt processing of your MSK auth request.

Error Causing Processing Delays

Highmark has noticed an uptick in auth submission errors for MSK services since May 1, 2026, when the management of MSK services moved from eviCore to Highmark.

Selecting "Medical Injectable" instead of "Surgical" during the auth submission process will delay the processing of your request.
