With June designated as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Month, Highmark Wholecare encourages all healthcare professionals to enhance their understanding of trauma and its profound impact on patient health.
Central to understanding and addressing trauma in patients is Trauma-Informed Care (TIC). TIC is not a specific therapeutic technique but a fundamental shift in how an organization operates. It recognizes and responds to the widespread impact of trauma, emphasizing physical, psychological, and emotional safety. Integrating TIC into your practice is crucial for creating a safe, empathetic, and effective healthcare environment for all members, especially those navigating behavioral health challenges
One of the leading causes of PTSD in adults is having a high Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) score of 4 or more. ACEs are potentially traumatic events occurring in childhood (Ages 0-17), including abuse (physical, emotional, sexual), neglect (physical, emotional), and family dysfunction (e.g., domestic violence, substance use, incarceration of a caregiver).
Screening for PTSD and ACEs is a vital component of Trauma-Informed Care. It provides invaluable insight into a member's health trajectory, informs individualized care plans, and fosters opportunities for prevention and early intervention.
